Medicine Crow

FILE - In this Aug. 27, 2008 file photo, Native American Crow historian Joe Medicine Crow tells then-presidential-candidate Barack Obama to "take veterans to the top when you move into the White House," during a visit to Billings, Mont. Medicine Crow, the last surviving war chief for Montana's Crow Tribe, died Sunday, April 3, 2016 in a Billings hospice at age 102. (AP) - Joseph Medicine Crow walked in "two worlds" - white and Native American - and made his mark on each. Medicine Crow, who died Sunday in a Billings hospice at the age of 102, grew up in a log home on Montana's Crow Indian Reservation, hearing stories during his childhood from direct participants in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Decades later, he returned from World War II a hero in his own right for performing a series of daring deeds that made him his tribe's last surviving war chief. Medicine Crow went on to become a Native American historian who gained recognition in scholarly circles, even as he sought to live according to Crow tradition. "I always told people, when you meet Joe Medicine Crow, you're shaking hands with the 19th Century," said Herman Viola, curator emeritus at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American Indians. "He really wanted to walk in both worlds, the white world and the Indian world, and he knew education was a key to success." Services are planned for Wednesday in Crow Agency, a town on the Crow Reservation. Medicine Crow will be buried at the Apsaalooke Veterans Cemetery, according to Bullis Mortuary funeral home. A member of the Crow Tribe's Whistling Water clan, Medicine Crow was raised by his grandparents near Lodge Grass, Montana, where Medicine Crow continued to live in the years leading to his death. His Crow name was "High Bird." He recalled listening as a child to stories about the Battle of the Little Bighorn from those who were there, including his grandmother's brother, White Man Runs Him, a scout for Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer. His grandfather, Yellowtail, raised Medicine Crow to be a warrior. The training began when Medicine Crow was just 6 or 7, with a grueling physical regimen that included running barefoot in the snow to toughen the boy's feet and spirit. "Warfare was our highest art, but Plains Indian warfare was not about killing. It was about intelligence, leadership, and honor," Medicine Crow wrote in his 2006 book "Counting Coup." During World War II, Medicine Crow completed the deeds necessary to earn the title of war chief, including stealing horses from an enemy encampment and engaging in hand-to-hand combat with a German soldier whose life Medicine Crow ultimately spared. Prior to leaving for the European front, Medicine Crow in 1939 became the first of his tribe to receive a master's degree, in anthropology. Upon his return from the war, Medicine Crow was designated tribal historian by the Crow Tribal Council, a position he filled for decades - all the while cataloging his people's nomadic history by collecting firsthand accounts of pre-reservation life from fellow tribal members. With his prodigious memory, Medicine Crow could accurately recall decades later the names, dates and exploits from the oral history he was exposed to as a child, Viola said. Those included tales told by four of the six Crow scouts who were at Custer's side at Little Bighorn and who Medicine Crow knew personally. Yet Medicine Crow also embraced the changes that came with the settling of the West, and he worked to bridge his people's cultural traditions with the opportunities of modern society, said Viola, who first met Medicine Crow in 1972 and collaborated with him on several books. Even after his hearing and eyesight faded, Medicine Crow continued to lecture into his 90s on the Battle of Little Bighorn and other major events in Crow history. His voice became familiar to many outside the region as the narrator for American Indian exhibits in major museums across the country. President Barack Obama awarded Medicine Crow the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009. During the White House ceremony, Obama referred to Medicine Crow as "a good man, a 'bacheitche' in Crow." "(His) life reflects not only the warrior spirit of the Crow people, but America's highest ideals," Obama said. He was nominated for the Congressional Gold Medal and was awarded honorary doctoral degrees from the University of Southern California and Montana's Rocky Mountain College. ___ Associated Press writer Steven K. Paulson contributed to this report.FILE - In this Aug. 12, 2009 file photo, President Barack Obama leans away to avoid the headdress as he presents the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom to Joseph Medicine Crow during ceremonies at the White House in Washington.

A tribute to MySpace, eh?

I'm gonna be honest, I never expected something like this to exist. Although, I figured someone would want to tribute a site that laid the backbone for the internet back in the day (when YouTube wasn't reduced to a copyright-restricted white mess.) With sites like ZippCast (paying tribute to the old YouTube), I guess somebody had to make a website that pays tribute to the old MySpace.)

Warriors of the Rainbow

Warriors of the Rainbow Prophecy   There was an old lady, from the "Cree" tribe, named "Eyes of Fire", who prophesied that one day, because of the white mans' or Yo-ne-gis' greed, there would come a time, when the fish would die in the streams, the birds would fall from the air, the waters would be blackened, and the trees would no longer be, mankind as we would know it would all but cease to exist. There would come a time when the "keepers of the legend, stories, culture rituals, and myths, and all the Ancient Tribal Customs" would be needed to restore us to health. They would be mankinds' key to survival, they were the "Warriors of the Rainbow". There would come a day of awakening when all the peoples of all the tribes would form a New World of Justice, Peace, Freedom and recognition of the Great Spirit. The "Warriors of the Rainbow" would spread these messages and teach all peoples of the Earth or "Elohi". They would teach them how to live the "Way of the Great Spirit". They would tell them of how the world today has turned away from the Great Spirit and that is why our Earth is "Sick". The "Warriors of the Rainbow" would show the peoples that this "Ancient Being" (the Great Spirit), is full of love and understanding, and teach them how to make the "Earth or Elohi" beautiful again. These Warriors would give the people principles or rules to follow to make their path right with the world. These principles would be those of the Ancient Tribes. The Warriors of the Rainbow would teach the people of the ancient practices of Unity, Love and Understanding. They would teach of Harmony among people in all four comers of the Earth. Like the Ancient Tribes, they would teach the peoples how to pray to the Great Spirit with love that flows like the beautiful mountain stream, and flows along the path to the ocean of life. Once again, they would be able to feel joy in solitude and in councils. They would be free of petty jealousies and love all mankind as their brothers, regardless of color, race or religion. They would feel happiness enter their hearts, and become as one with the entire human race. Their hearts would be pure and radiate warmth, understanding and respect for all mankind, Nature, and the Great Spirit. They would once again fill their minds, hearts, souls, and deeds with the purest of thoughts. They would seek the beauty of the Master of Life - the Great Spirit! They would find strength and beauty in prayer and the solitudes of life. Their children would once again be able to run free and enjoy the treasures of Nature and Mother Earth. Free from the fears of toxins and destruction, wrought by the Yo-ne-gi and his practices of greed. The rivers would again run clear, the forests be abundant and beautiful, the animals and birds would be replenished. The powers of the plants and animals would again be respected and conservation of all that is beautiful would become a way of life. The poor, sick and needy would be cared for by their brothers and sisters of the Earth. These practices would again become a part of their daily lives. The leaders of the people would be chosen in the old way - not by their political party, or who could speak the loudest, boast the most, or by name calling or mud slinging, but by those whose actions spoke the loudest. Those who demonstrated their love, wisdom, and courage and those who showed that they could and did work for the good of all, would be chosen as the leaders or Chiefs. They would be chosen by their "quality" and not the amount of money they had obtained. Like the thoughtful and devoted "Ancient Chiefs", they would understand the people with love, and see that their young were educated with the love and wisdom of their surroundings. They would show them that miracles can be accomplished to heal this world of its ills, and restore it to health and beauty. The tasks of these "Warriors of the Rainbow" are many and great. There will be terrifying mountains of ignorance to conquer and they shall find prejudice and hatred. They must be dedicated, unwavering in their strength, and strong of heart. They will find willing hearts and minds that will follow them on this road of returning "Mother Earth" to beauty and plenty - once more. The day will come, it is not far away. The day that we shall see how we owe our very existence to the people of all tribes that have maintained their culture and heritage. Those that have kept the rituals, stories, legends, and myths alive. It will be with this knowledge, the knowledge that they have preserved, that we shall once again return to "harmony" with Nature, Mother Earth, and mankind. It will be with this knowledge that we shall find our "Key to our Survival". This is the story of the "Warriors of the Rainbow" and this is my reason for protecting the culture, heritage, and knowledge of my ancestors. I know that the day "Eyes of Fire" spoke of - will come! I want my children and grandchildren to be prepared to accept this task. The task of being one of the........"Warriors of the Rainbow".

My First Friendproject Blog Entry | Joe Winko

Not exactly sure how to start this out, but I've just became interested in the blogging feature on friendproject. I know that myspace use to have it too so I figured I should give it a shot :)  To start with, my name is Joe Winko. I was born on December 5th 1995 (proud Sagittarius) which means I'm 19 years old right now. I am also of native Hawaiian descent, although I have never stepped foot on any of the Hawaiian islands. Instead, I was born in Wisconsin, a cold ass state in the Midwest.  Some random facts about me are that I love horror movies & video games. I am also a horror movie director for YouTube! But all of my videos are made with the Sims 2 & Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. I've been making videos since year 2005. I also post a lot of other stuff on YouTube too, like my talkshow videos: "Joe Winko Talk" and a whole bunch of gaming videos. It turns out that I actually have more than 500 videos uploaded on YouTube. (I know, I was shocked about that too).  This may seem weird but I even have my own "distinct" look on YouTube too. In my live videos that I appear in, I wear no shirt (mostly because my bedroom gets SUPER HOT because it's right over the furnace in my house). But because of that, I'm still always shirtless in all of my videos, because I know for a fact, that the moment I don a shirt in ANY of my Joe Winko Talk videos, my subscribers would flood the video with comments saying "Omg! Joe Winko is wearing a shirt!" and it would annoy the living HELL out of me! But the most distinct thing I wear is a red bandanna. DON'T BE ALARMED! it's nothing gang-related. I don't even wear it the same way gangsters do! Instead, it's rolled up at the bottom and tied around my head with the point sticking straight up. (It's hard to explain exactly how I wear it but it's almost like a garden gnome hat). A lot of people think it looks strange and that it makes me look "stupid" #HatersGonnaHate  BUT I think it's very unique. No one EVER wears a bandanna that way, except me. It also gives me an extremely distinct look! Whenever someone sees a skinny shirtless boy with a red pointed bandanna tied around his head, they will automatically think "Hey! That's Joe Winko!" unless they never heard or seen me before, which most of the time they haven't as of now :( but oh well :P Later on, I added a red collared cape to my distinct "Joe Winko" look and soon after a pair of black leather spiked wristbands, which causes some people to mistake me as a 'biker' until they see my cape (because it'd be very dangerous to ride a motorcycle while wearing one!).  This last fact about me may be very personal but I am also autistic. It causes me to think differently and see the world from a very obscure perspective (compared to normal thinking people). But in a way I'm proud of it because it enables me to have a vibrant imagination. I'm quite sure that if I wasn't autistic, I would have never been creative enough to conjure up the red bandanna and red cape look!  Lastly, I want to close this blog entry with saying this... This may seem really cheesy but there's a reason why I always post so much stuff on YouTube and why I post so much stuff online and even why I'm posting this blog. I always know that I won't be alive forever. One day I will be dead and gone like all people eventually end up (I know that sounds extremely morbid, eerie, and depressing but it's true). I'm not afraid of dying at all (besides the pain) but one aspect of it does disturb me quite a bit... being forgotten. The thought of having my whole life over forever and no one remembering who I am or what I've done while I was alive sends CHILLS up my spine! BUT I know for a fact that won't ever happen ;) because I'll keep posting over and over as much as I can until my time is up, which hopefully won't be until a really long time but you truly never know. I know people may not agree with me on this, but in my opinion memories will keep any spirit/soul alive FOREVER. No matter how long they have been gone for. I hope that one day, 150 years from now, some stranger of the future will read this, find all of my YouTube videos and will see that I was alive and that I was out there and that I was someone, a boy named Joe Winko a.k.a you're favorite hawaiian man. ^I know that closing paragraph was a little bit lame but it was best I could come up with. Please comment & share your thoughts :) ♥
